What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that originated thousands of years ago. It is based on the premise that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of the body’s life energy, or “qi,” can cause health issues. Acupuncturists insert hair-thin needles to specific acupuncture points throughout the body to restore the flow of qi, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation.

Acupuncture is said to be useful in addressing a variety of health conditions, including:

• Arthritis
• Chronic pain (such as headaches, back pain, neck pain)
• Depression
• Insomnia
• Migraines
• Sciatica
• Sinus congestion
• Stress and anxiety
• Tinnitus
• Weight loss

Moxibustion or Moxa:

Moxibustion, or Moxa, is a form of heat therapy that consists of burning the dried leaf on or above specific points on the body. It helps to warm areas of the body with the intention of stimulating circulation and lymphatic flow. It also helps to smooth the flow of Qi and blood and expel pathogenic influences.

Cupping Therapy:

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

What is the Tui-Na manual therapy?

Tui-Na manual therapy is a compound word for pull and push, which is an oriental medicine treatment that physically releases areas related to the spine and joints. When the muscles and bones of the human body are not in their normal position the cartilage surrounding the bone swells up causing pain due to long periods of tension and tightness and lack of blood circulation.

How Tui-Na manual therapy works?

Tui-Na is based on the An, Mo massage technique, the pushing (An) and the stroking (Mo), which includes many other techniques. The techniques include stroking along the muscles and meridian lines (meridians = channel in which the qi flows), the pressing of acupuncture points, rhythmic tapping with the side of the hand and various rolling and rubbing movements. The technique, intensity, and speed of the Tui-Na massage will depend on the individual diagnosis.

Tui- Na treats and prevents disease through six basic methods:

Stroking (mo)     Rejoining (jie)
Lifting (ti)           Pressing (an)
Pushing (tui)      Holding (na)

Tui-Na focuses on specific acupressure points, energy trigger points, and muscles and joints surrounding the affected area in a patient.
